Hue Co-owner, Alan Conover, has been a stylist for more than 23 years. The sought-after stylist was named “Best Haircut in Houston” by Lucky Magazine for 2 consecutive years. Creative since he was a child, Conover studied music in school and dreamed of being a High School band director, before setting his sights on becoming an Architect. Cutting clean, modern, and yet classic hair with perfect color that enhances each guest, not overwhelming their natural features, it’s easy to see the architectual influence in his work, today. Opening Hue with Cion Ortega has been a labor of love that has stretched his limits as a stylist, a business man and fired his passion for design. “We looked at a lot of spaces but something just clicked when we walked in here” he says of the bright, jewel box spot where Hue resdes today at 906 Westheimer. “We worked on a lot of the details ourselves, working nights and our days off. I know now I can do anything I set my mind to, it’s a dream come true.” Conover has a special passion for natural curly hair, “A great day for me is a gorgeous mop of naturally curly hair with just me, the guest and my scissors. I simply love it!” A longtime “foodie” Conover stays atop the latest hair trends by taking classes in New York and Los Angeles. “I am a voracious reader, books are piled atop my bedside table and I tear through magazines like Dwell, Vanity Fair and Interview. They provide me with amazing inspiration. I get asked a lot which celebrity client would I love to have in my chair. But honestly? I wouldn’t trade my longtime clients of 5, 10 or 20 years for any celebrity.”

Tess De La Riva
Tess is a true artist—not just with hair, but in the traditional sense, too. She studied painting and drawing in college, but ultimately decided to seek a different path when it came to choosing a career. Fortunately, a friend recommended she explore the Aveda Institute, and the pieces fell into place. Tess has always loved the idea of cutting hair, and was delighted to learn how much artistry was involved in hair color. She enrolled in and graduated from the Aveda Institute Houston, where she first learned about Hue Salon. She knew immediately it was where she wanted to work.
Tess particularly loves working with balayage, blondes and extensions, and like most stylists, she’s excited when she has the opportunity to enact a drastic change. At the end of the day, however, what she loves most is helping a client learn to love their hair again—whether that entails a 1-inch trim with a new style or a massive color correction. She wants her guests to love and explore the relationship with their hair.

Zackery loves the warm, welcoming environment at Hue and knowing that everyone is truly happy to be there. His eight-year-old self was onto something, because for him, the thing as rewarding as making a client happy is knowing he gets to make a living doing something he loves.
