7 Hair Extensions Myths Debunked

It might seem like hair extensions are a relatively new service with how often we’ve seen them in the media (and on your friends) in the last few years, but the truth is that hair extensions and wigs date back to 3400 B.C. in Ancient Egypt.

With their long history, many myths and misconceptions are bound to pop up. Maybe you’ve been dreaming of long, voluminous locks, but some of these untruths are holding you back. The team at our Montrose hair salon is here to debunk some of those myths.

Myth #1: Hair Extensions are Damaging to your Natural Hair

One of the myths you’ll hear the most about hair extensions is that they cause damage to your natural hair. However, when applied and maintained correctly by a professional stylist, hair extensions should not cause any damage to your natural hair. In fact, many of our clients have seen their natural hair grow longer and stronger than before they started getting extensions.

As always, it's essential to follow proper care instructions and schedule regular maintenance appointments to ensure the health and integrity of your hair.

Myth #2: Hair Extensions are Low-Maintenance

Sure, there are types of low-maintenance hair extensions out there (like clip-ins or halo) but long-term wear hair extensions that are in your hair up to 12 weeks are higher maintenance than you might think. Daily brushing, blow drying, and following all at-home hair care instructions are crucial to keeping your extensions and your natural hair in good shape.

Myth #3: Extensions are Only For Length

It is true that many people add in hair extensions to achieve their mermaid hair dreams, but it’s also true that many people like adding in extensions for volume only, cutting the extensions to match their natural length.

Fusion extensions can also be added in to help create a certain haircut shape where your natural hair is lower in density.

Myth #4: All Hair Extensions are the Same

Hair extensions are almost as diverse as the people who wear them are. At Hue Salon, we offer keratin fusion extensions, sew-in wefts, hand-tied volume wefts, and tape-in extensions.  Within each type of extension there are variations in quality, material, and brands.

Myth #5: Hair Extensions Last Forever

As the hair grows, the extension grows out as well. Most hair extensions need to be removed around 12 weeks. Depending on the type of extensions you have, the hair might need to be replaced. Sew-in wefts can be reused more than once, while fusion extensions cannot.

Myth #6: Extensions Aren’t Natural Hair

While there are synthetic options out there, at Hue Salon we use 100% natural hair extensions that can (and must!) be treated like real hair. Hair care products, heat protectant, and low heat styling should be used on your extensions.

Myth #7: Everyone Can Get Extensions

The truth is, not everyone is a great candidate for extensions. If you’re not committed to the at-home care instructions or take care of your extensions as you would your natural hair, they may not be for you.

If you’re experiencing significant shedding or breakage, putting in extensions can cause severe matting and even lead to more breakage on your natural hair if the anchor point (keratin bond or sew-in bead) is compromised.

At Hue Salon, we believe that everyone deserves to feel confident and beautiful in their own skin, and if hair extensions can help you achieve that, we're here to make it happen.
