Haircut Buzzwords to Know Before Seeing Your Stylist

Most of us know the tried and true haircut names: long layers, bob, pixie. But what about butterfly cut, lob, jellyfish cut, wolf cut, or bixie? It sometimes feels like there’s a new trend every week on social media, and while we love the innovation, it can be overwhelming to not know what a word means. Being on the same page as your stylist is helpful in making sure that you’re getting the best color or cut that you want.

To make things easier (since there isn’t a dictionary of terms sitting at every stylist’s station) we put together some of the hottest, trendiest haircut terms we’ve seen on social media lately and what they mean. We’re also throwing in a few classic haircut terms. That way, you know exactly what you’re asking for and can be happy with the results every time.

Bixie Haircut

A lot like couple ship names on the internet (think Bennifer or Polin) the word bixie is the combination of two haircut names: bob and pixie. But what does it mean? It’s the in-between of both: shorter than a bob, but longer than a pixie. Perfect for those who can’t decide.

Butterfly Cut

The buzz on the butterfly cut might have died down a little, but the shape of it remains unique and eye-catching. The style pairs short layers with long layers that resemble the delicate wings of a butterfly. There’s versatility in this haircut that allows you to wear it in different ways depending on how you style it.

Dusting

We’ve seen this term pop up more and more lately. If a trim is only a little bit off, a dusting is even less. This technique is great for when your hair is in a healthy place and you’re liking the shape on it, but want to clean up the ends just a smidge.

Fringe

Fringe is another word for bangs. Typically, the only difference between the two is where you live. Most of the time in the US we say bangs; while in the UK, they say fringe. Though you might hear our stylist use them both interchangeably. Within the fringe/bangs umbrella you can have many different styles: blunt bangs, curtain bangs, side bangs, baby bangs, and more.

Lob

Much like the bixie, a lob combines two words: long and bob. The lob is just a longer version of the classic bob. Typically a lob will sit around the collarbone or slightly longer. If something above the shoulders feels two short for you, trying out this sleek and effortless haircut could be a great option for you.

Undercut

Traditionally a men’s haircut term, undercut has started to be used in women’s haircuts as well. The term is used when the sides or back of the hair is cut shorter than the top. An undercut can be used in long hairstyles to remove volume or weight in thick hair.

Wolf Cut

The wolf cut is a combination of a shag and a mullet. It has shorter layers and bangs around the face, with longer hair in the back. Sometimes cut with a razor, this haircut adds a lot of texture to the hair, giving it a ton of movement and versatility.
